CCM: China’s bioherbicide market worth conquering 10-20-2016

Summary: Bioherbicide is the need in developing eco-agriculture in China and it will become the development trend in China’s herbicide market in the future. Pesticide enterprises can regard it as their development goal since they can get huge profit from it.

In early June 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer announced to make all-around evaluation on 2,4-D, another widely used chemical herbicide besides glyphosate. That chemical herbicide may cause cancer makes people focus more on biopesticides and look forward to the bioherbicide market. Currently, although bioherbicide does not enter large scale production in China and its application value has not been realized, it is the need of developing bio-agriculture and will become the development trend in China’s herbicide market in the future. With such huge profit, pesticide enterprises should pay more attention to it and regard it as the working direction and one of the targets that are worth conquering.

Qiang Sheng, professor of the Weed Research Laboratory, Nanjing Agricultural University introduced that since the 1980s-1990s, experts both at home and abroad have studied on bioherbicide, and they have already developed a certain amount of bioherbicide. Especially in recent decade, Chinese experts have set up the technical system on the research of Chinese bioherbicide. For example, the research on digitaria sanguinalis-curvularia eragrostidi has made progress. China has a batch of technical achievements of bioherbicide with proprietary intellectual property rights and has 15 national invention patents in this field. However, due to the limited time and funds, these bioherbicide products are still at the primary stage of commercialization, which need further improvement of production techniques and application technologies.

Since bioherbicde is the ideal substitute for chemical herbicide with safety, non-pollution and non-residue, it meets the market demand and will become the development trend in China’s herbicide market.

Developing bioherbicide can reduce the usage of chemical herbicide and greatly improve the international competitiveness of China’s crops, which is:

  • The important material basis for controlling diseases and insect pests, guaranteeing the stable and high yield of crops and safeguarding food safety and social stability;
  • The green agricultural input for reducing chemical herbicide residue, avoiding secondary pollution, improving agricultural ecological, realizing environmental safety, ensuring public safety and life health;
  • The important material assurance for realizing the high-efficient, safe and high-quality production of crops, as well as increasing farmers’ income.

Nevertheless, Chinese large specialized herbicide manufacturers do not engage in the application promotion of bioherbicide currently. Industry insiders considered that main reasons are as follows:

1. Technology for large-scale production of bioherbicide is immature. Although some Chinese scientific research institutions or manufacturers possess the patented technology of bioherbicide, relevant standards or certificate number are not perfect yet. So, the production cost and application cost of bioherbicide are higher than that of chemical herbicide.

2. Bioherbicide has strong selectivity for target species, and its target is single, which greatly limits the actual production and application.

3. Bioherbicide has a high requirement for environment. For instance, only under high humidity (>=80%) and appropriate temperature (20-30
), can microorganism propagate in quantity so as to ensure the activity of herbicide.

Since developing bioherbicide can get high profit, pesticide enterprises should attach greater importance to bioherbicide and regard it as one of the major targets to conquer. They should step up efforts to do researches and actively cooperate with collages and scientific research units, so as to further perfect the development environment of related new technologies. Also, they should make tracking study on bioherbicide products and technologies which have good potential for commercialization and enhance time and investment inputs in large-scale production techniques and application technologies with low cost and high efficiency, to push these products enter commercialization successfully. What's more, they should cooperate with scientific research institutions to conduct systematic selection on candidate organisms or metabolites of bioherbicide based on the targets including malignant weeds of major crop fields, serious invasive weeds, woodland weeds, aquatic weeds and resistant weeds. This can enrich the research variety in the laboratory.
