Glyphosate China Monthly Report provides you with real-time intelligence on China's glyphosate market.

China is the world's largest producer of glyphosate, with 80% of the glyphosate produced in China being exported. Glyphosate is also still by far the most popular herbicide among Chinese farmers.

However, the industry is facing a number of serious long-term challenges. Increasing crop resistance threatens to make glyphosate less attractive to farmers, while research linking the product to cancer could lead to several key export markets banning the product altogether. Meanwhile, Chinese producers are struggling to comply with tough new environmental regulations and cope with severe industry overcapacity.

Glyphosate China Monthly Report will help you stay ahead of the game in this fast-changing market with real-time reporting on the entire glyphosate industry chain, from raw materials to end consumption. This includes:

  • Breaking news from China and abroad
  •
  • The latest market data, including price information for raw materials, intermediates and end products, import/export data, production, consumption, operating rates, etc.

In mid-June, name lists of the 8th CAC Awards were unveiled online, including the "2019 Top 20 Chinese Pesticides Exporters", the "2019 Overseas Market Expansion Award", the "2019 Promising Companies", the "CAC Fertilizer Enterprises with International Influential Brands", the "Excellent Fertilizer Exporters", and the "CAC Recommended Suppliers 2020". Four key glyphosate TC producers were on the lists of the "2019 Top 20 Chinese Pesticides Exporters" and the "CAC Recommended Suppliers 2020". Last year, Leshan Fuhua was the largest glyphosate exporter, followed by Nantong Jiangshan; their domestic glyphosate sales this year are predicted to be impacted by the COVID-19 crisis overseas.

Gross sales of the first 10 companies made up 38.30%, with a yearly increase of 5.30%. Some main domestic glyphosate TC producers were on the list, such as Yangnong Chemical Group, Zhejiang Wynca, Leshan Fuhua, Xingfa Group (75.54% of the top 100 enterprises' total sales), and Nantong Jiangshan (62.47%).

This month, China's phosphorus chemical prices showed low overall. In early June, prices and downstream demand of phosphorus trichloride appeared weak, with continuously decreasing yellow phosphorus prices; in mid-June, downstream requirements of phosphorus trichloride were flat with abundant market supply, while yellow phosphorus prices remained low even though some producers intended for replenishment before the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival; in late June, phosphorus trichloride prices maintained stagnant and yellow phosphorus prices were still stable and low. Short-term phosphorus trichloride and yellow phosphorus prices are predicted to remain low and stable, unlikely to push up glyphosate TC prices as a result.

To better meet market needs, Qingfeng Tianying plans to adjust its pesticide formulation capacity via reducing some capacity and adding new production lines, but to remain unchanged total capacity of its plant. In terms of glyphosate formulation capacity, the company proposes to decrease capacity of glyphosate-isopropylammonium 41% AS from 28,000 t/a to 17,990 t/a and glyphosate ammonium 74.7% SGX from 2,000 t/a to 1,000 t/a, and to increase 500 t/a of glyphosate potassium salt 540g/L AS and 1,000 t/a of glyphosate dimethylamine salt 608g/L AS.

On 4 June, Zhenjiang Jiangnan, wholly-owned subsidiary of Zhejiang Wynca, published the EIA report of its glyphosate production & energy saving & emission reduction project on its homepage. Attaching great importance to the project, Zhenjiang Jiangnan has built various treatment facilities (for waste water, exhaust gases, solid waste and noise pollution) in accordance with the requirements of the EIA and approvals. One of the project's main construction contents is to transform downstream product lines. The 1st project phase is set to be built from this Aug. to Dec. and the 2nd phase Jan. 2021 to June 2021. Upon completion of the 1st phase, Zhenjiang Jiangnan will increase both of its glyphosate ammonium 33% AS and glyphosate-isopropylammonium formulation capacity to 20,000 t/a, and add 5,000 t/a of glyphosate 75.7% SG capacity.

In the first half of June, the Hebei government released an Implementation Plan. It highlights that the authority will establish an inter-departmental joint working mechanism this year to conduct investigations and assessments of safety risks in regional chemical parks (including chemical concentration areas), while related departments will carry out the identification of those chemical parks, with a list to be published before late Oct. 2020.

In recent months, international oil prices recovered rapidly due to reduced oil production in Saudi Arabia and Russia. At 14:30 on 3 June New York time (02:30 on 4 June Beijing time), settlement price of US crude oil futures for July rose by USD0.48 to USD37.29 per barrel. Yet with decreased ex-works prices of methyl alcohol this month, prices of related raw materials such as paraformaldehyde and glycine (also related to glyphosate TC) also appeared to drop. Therefore, China's glyphosate TC prices in June will probably not rise sharply, despite increased crude oil prices.
