On 6 Jan., Anhui Guozhen signed a licence agreement on sunliquid cellulosic ethanol technology with Clariant and Chemtex. This marks China's 1st application for the technology. Meanwhile, an agreement for a 100,000 t/a cellulosic ethanol project was also signed the same day.

On 15 Jan., China and the US signed a phase-one trade agreement. Both parties will deepen their cooperation in agriculture, with China to improve its tariff quota administration for corn, wheat and rice conforming to its promises to the WTO. Meanwhile, China also commits to an increased USD40 billion worth of US agricultural products (including ethanol and DDGS), with some prerequisites for US DDGS and feed additives canceled.

In 2019, Chinese corn price was USD266.80/t on average, down 2.90% YoY (2018: USD274.70/t), due to low demand for pig breeding and loose corn supply.

On 27 Dec., the Ecological Environment Bureau of Songyuan City, Jilin Province published the EIA of Cargill Bio-Chemical's corn purification project on its homepage. This project comprises 6 corn screening & purification production lines (total screening capacity: 2 million t/a of corn) and related testing processes.

On 18 Jan., investment details of a 300,000 t/a corn stalk fuel alcohol project in Changchun City and a 100,000 t/a cellulose fuel ethanol project in Siping City were published on the homepage of the Commerce Department of Jilin Province.

Shandong Tianli Pharmaceutical began to run its 210,000 t/a sugar alcohol production line (10,000 t/a of trehalose and 200,000 t/a of sorbitol) in late Dec. 2019. On 25 Nov., the business gained the anhydrous dextrose registration approved by the Centre for Drug Evaluation, NMPA.

China began to adjust import tariffs on some products on 1 Jan., 2020. Provisional import tax rates on corn would continue to be in compliance with the domestic tariff quota system with unchanged import tariffs, but corresponding MFN tariff rates for New Zealand, Peru, Costa Rica, Switzerland, Iceland, Singapore, Australia, South Korea, Georgia, Chile and Pakistan, as well as under the Asia-Pacific Trade Agreement, would be further reduced.
