A group of Peruvian seafood companies were authorized to supply the Russian market, after the government of that country decided to ban food imports from the European Union (EU) and the United States, said Peru''s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur).
The National Society of Industries (SNI) pointed out that a total of 18 firms will resume exports of fish products to the European country.
The measure takes place after Russia placed a total one-year’s ban on food imports, including fish, from the European Union (EU), United States and some other Western countries in response to the sanctions implemented against it over the conflicts with Ukraine.
Last week, Peruvian ambassador to Russia, Gustavo Otero, and the head of Russia''s Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor), Serguei Dankvert, held talks with the aim to assess the market requirements for the products they demand and that were previously supplied by the EU and U.S.A.
During the meeting, frozen fishery products, fruits, vegetables, tubers and dairy products were mentioned among the foods Russia is keen on importing.
It is worth mentioning that Peruvian exports will have to meet Russian sanitary requirements as well as those from the Customs Union, which is also formed by Belarus and Kazakhstan.
According to the SNI''s data, Peru exported seafood products for human consumption to the Russian market for more than US$16 million in 2013.
Mincetur noted officials from both countries will continue working to include other firms from the sector as suppliers of seafood products.
