Canada requests animal feed safety verification from Japan

Imports from Japan with regards to food and animal feed have become a concern for Canada so the country is calling for more stringent measures to be carried out on products from affected areas in Japan, amid the country's nuclear disaster.

Paperwork showing information on food safety should be given to Canada before food and animal feed products are allowed into the country.

This announcement was made by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. It said that the new requirement for documentation, as of Friday (Apr 1), was implemented so that safety of products can be proven.

The areas in Japan which will be affected by Canada's rules are Fukushima, Gunma, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Miyagi, Yamagata, Niigata, Nagano, Yamanashi, Saitama, Tokyo and Chiba.

It has been reported that above-safety radiation levels have been discovered in some vegetables from the Fukushima area in Japan.

Products that also require documents proving their safety include milk, fruit and vegetables. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has begun carrying out tests to detect radiation levels of products from Japan.
