Vietnam further expands vannamei shrimp farming
   
   

   

The move from black tiger to vannamei shrimp farming in Vietnam is continuing and as of March 2014, vannamei shrimp was given priority to farm in many provinces brought about by its short farming period and high productivity, according to Aquaculture Department under Directorate of Fisheries (D-Fish).

   

   

In the first three months of the year, large increase in vannamei shrimp farming area was reported in provinces such as Soc Trang with 6,113 hectares, up 167% on-year; Ca Mau with 3,704 hectares, representing five-fold increase; Tra Vinh with 1,828 hectares, showing four-fold increase; Bac Lieu with 1,573 hectares, up 118%; Long An with 1,338 hectares, up 65%.

   

   

According to D-Fish, the country's fish production in first quarter 2014 was estimated to touch 1.185 million tonnes, up 3% on-year.

   

   

In which, capture output reached 687,000 tonnes, up 5.6% and aquaculture output was 498,000 tonnes, equalling to that of the same period of 2013.

   

   

The production of farmed shrimpreached 87,500, up 10.1% on-year, while farmed finfish yielded 346,000 tonnes, down 4% on-year.
