In Dec. 2015, Newcon Inc., Ningbo
successfully obtained registration certificates for its chilo suppressalis walker and spodoptera litura sex attractants from the MOA. This was
groundbreaking in China and epitomized the standardized and legalized
development of Chinese sex attractant technology. Consequently, this
development could speed up the industrialization of insect pheromone and the
broad application of green prevention and control technologies.
In Dec. 2015, Newcon Inc., Ningbo successfully gained registration certificates
for its chilo suppressalis walker and spodoptera litura sex
attractants from the Ministry of Agriculture of the People’s Republic of China
(MOA). This set a precedent for the use of sex attractant in China and symbolized
that Chinese sex attractant technology would follow a standardized and
legalized development trend. Furthermore, this could speed up the
industrialization of insect pheromone and the application of green prevention
and control technologies.
Insect sex attractant is biomimetic high-tech product that simulates insect sex
pheromones found in nature, it is released by a releaser in fields to lure and
kill heterosexual insects. In using this technology to trap or kill pests the
attractant will make no contact with plants or other agricultural produce in
the field and leave no pesticide residue. It is one of the best options for
ecologically preventing and controlling insect pests.
Insect sex attractant has the following advantages:
It kills pests in a way that takes
advantage of an individual pest’s reaction to sex pheromones, causes no harm to
beneficial insects or natural enemies and creates no further generations of
pests, so a resistance to it cannot be built up.
The application of insect sex attractant
can reduce pesticide dosage. If it is applied at the right time, it can reduce
labor costs, solve the problem of pesticide residue and improve the ecological
environment.
It helps to break the green barriers of
international agricultural produce trade, and subsequently improve the quality
and price of agricultural produce as well as increase agricultural income.
In addition, insect sex attractant is a special bionic technology product, and
also a biochemical product in the biological pesticide category. As stipulated
in the Regulations on Pesticide Administration issued by the MOA, insect sex
attractant can only be produced, sold and applied after gaining a pesticide
registration certificate. The registration of insect sex attractant is
different from that of chemical pesticides in the following five aspects:
1. Field exposure method:
Whether to use trapper, isotropic or mating inhibitors or not depends on the
usage method and dosage, because direct spraying will cause residue.
2. Compound structure and toxicity
3. Dosage:
When it exceeds a certain dosage, the flavor will spread over the field and
onto plants. Direct spraying may lead to residue.
4. Some attractants may harm natural
enemies and beneficial insects such as bees.
5. Attractants can be dangerous when combined with chemical pesticides:
There are risks of toxicity, residue and harm to the ecology.
At the beginning of 2015, China began to introduce the "improving
pesticide utilization & reducing chemical pesticide usage" program.
Since then, local regions have successively carried out different forms of
green prevention and control plans. Local governments have drawn up action
plans and measures to promote green prevention and control technologies, and
there is a consensus that biological pesticides and biological control
technology should be given priority.
In particular, predators and physical and chemical lure products are the key
recommended products. Take the Recommendation List of Pesticide and Equipment
for Green Prevention and Control of Crop Diseases, Pests, Weeds and Rodents in
2015 in Beijing as an example; the list was screened by an expert panel, and
nearly half of the products were eliminated. 20 out of 82 recommended products
were predators or physical and chemical lures, accounting for nearly 25%.
Government policies are being released which require reductions in the dosage
of chemical pesticides, and all-level agricultural departments are
strengthening their efforts in the R&D, integration, demonstration and
popularization of green prevention and control technologies. Because of this,
insect sex attractant has a bright future and to some extent, will reduce the
use of chemical pesticides.
