The polytrimethylene terephthalate (PTT) has an excellent performance and the PTT fiber is widely welcomed by customers. However, the domestic PTT fiber industrial chain is not integrated with the core raw material—1,3-propanediol (PDO) and even the PTT resin mainly purchased from multinational enterprises like DuPont, according to CCM’s latest issue of Biomaterials China News 1303.
Based on the source of PTT resin and PDO, enterprises involved in China's PTT industry can be divided into three types.
The first type of enterprises' main business is to purchase PTT resin and then process it into different kinds of PTT fiber and fabric. Quanzhou Haitian Material Technology Corporation (HTT) and Xianglu Chemical Fiber Co., Ltd. (Xianglu Chemical Fiber) are both included in this type and are authorized by DuPont to process and modify Sorona®—DuPont's PTT resin.
The second type of enterprises can produce PTT resin themselves, but a limited supply of PDO becomes the restriction for their development. Currently, the PDO mainly comes from DuPont and Shell, and the supply is not sufficient in China. The PTT resin is made from pure terephthalic acid (PTA) and PDO, PDO being the key part in the PTT production cost. PDO can be produced from a biological method and a petrochemical method, but only a biological method can greatly decrease the production cost. Shenghong Group may belong to this type. Shenghong Group's PTT resin capacity is currently 30,000t/a, and the company also intends to construct its own biological PDO production line.
