Hong Kong stocks closed down in volatile trade on Tuesday, with the weighted index losing 48.02 points, or 0.24 percent, to 20,212.08 points.
The benchmark Hang Seng Index opened up at 20,344.75 and traded between 20,140.31 and 20,431.86 during the day. Turnover increased slightly to 74.28 billion HK dollars.
The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index added 2.47 points to close at 10,946.64.
Heavyweight HSBC dipped 1 percent to 69.1 HK dollars. China Mobile was 0.05 point lower at 74.7 HK dollars.
Chinese mainland banks pared their gains from Monday's surge. ICBC moved up 0.8 percent to 5.17 HK dollars. CCB inched down 0.2 percent to 5.53 HK dollars. BOC rose 0.3 percent to 3.15 HK dollars.
Developer Cheung Kong Holding, controlled by billionaire Li Ka-shing, shed 1.12 percent to 106 HK dollars.
Internet content provider Tencent dumped 4.13 percent to 181.2 HK dollars.
Mobile phone maker Foxconn closed up 12.5 percent to 3.86 HK dollars on news of Google's acquisition of Motorola Mobility. (1 U. S. dollar equals 7.791 HK dollars)
