Vietnam’s shrimp exports rose significantly, at 41.2%, in May to all markets, but to some more than others, Vietnam seafood trade statistics show.
Exports rose nearly 100% to the European Union, 44.6% to the United States, and 139% to Switzerland.
The US, EU and Japan are the country’s most significant markets, taking up 25%, 17% and 17% of total exports, respectively.
The United States total exports hit $89.5 million during May, while Japan, closely followed by the EU, both hit about $59m for the same time period.
The EU rose markedly to catch up with Japan, which was a less major growth area, although exports still rose a relatively significant 9.2%.
Exports to China and Hong Kong also accelerated at a rapid rate, up 14.7% year on year, to $50.9m.
In the first five months of the year together, results were even ether. Total exports from Vietnam rose 70.4% to all markets combined, with one of the most significant increases of all — 128.6% — shown in the United States, which hit $444.9m.
The EU also rose markedly, at 106%. Within the EU, Belgium was particularly hot, having risen 140.2%.
Hong Kong and China’s imports from Vietnam, meanwhile, rose 66.1% to 180.2m. All Asian nations were major targets, with the ASEAN countries getting 23.6m in Viernamese shrimp, 43.6% more than last year.
Other major markets for Vietnamese shrimp include Switzerland, which saw its imports rise 127.6%; Australia, where imports rose 68.2%; and Canada, where they rose 58.1%.
Within the EU, Germany rose to $50.9m — a 92.7% increase.
