Vietnam sees local fertiliser demand at 9.8 million tonnes

Vietnam''s demand for fertilisers in 2012 is projected to reach 9.8 million tonnes for three kinds including NPK, urea and phosphates in 2012, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The figures will include 3.5 million tonnes of NPK, two million tonnes of urea, 1.8 million tonnes of phosphates, 950,000 tonnes of DAP, 920,000 tonnes of potassium and 710,000 tonnes of SA, the ministry said.

The Southeast Asian country can produce enough volumes of urea, phosphate and NPK fertilisers for its consumption, the ministry said.

It needs to import two third of DAP volume as the DAP Dinh Vu Plant in the northern city of Haiphong can produce only 330,000 tonnes yearly while the Vietnam National Chemical Group (Vinachem) is building the DAP Plant in the northern province of Lao Cai with an annual capacity of 330,000 tonnes.

Vietnam needs to import all volume of potassium and SA as the country has no plant to produce these two kinds of fertilisers.

Meanwhile, Vietnam''s urea output is expected at 2.36 million tonnes in 2012, exceeding the local demand of 1.8 million tonnes and the country can export 536,000 tonnes of urea fertilisers this year.

The country has two urea plants Phu My and Ca Mau with annual capacity of 800,000 tonnes, one plant with yearly capacity of 560,00 tonnes in the northern province of Ninh Binh and Ha Bac Urea Fertilizer Plant with a capacity of 200,000 tonnes a year.

Cong Thanh Group plans to build a urea fertiliser plant with an annual capacity of 560,000 tonnes.
