Russia is approving genetically modified (GM) crops to be grown within the country, which will take effect on July 1, 2014, according to a government decree, however, registration for GM seeds is anticipated to take a couple years.

The first harvest of GM soy in Russia could be as early as 2016-17, according to the president of the Russian Grain Union, Arkady Zlochevskiy.

Currently GM cropscan only be grown in experimental fields. Only certain varieties of imported grains can be GMO. Approximately 22 plant varieties are approved for import.
