Kemira merges food and feed divisions

Press Release

Kemira, global producer of high quality organic acids-based solutions, has announced the merger of its food and feed segments, in order to address evolving market conditions and customer demands more effectively.

Kemira, who has already been supplying organic acids and salts to the global food and feed industry for many years, sees its customer base getting more and more involved in fully integrated meat production activities, as well as an increased demand on product quality standards, traceability and certifications.

Kemira''s feed segment focuses on feed quality preservation as well as animal performance enhancement. Kemira''s food segment focuses on food safety and shelf life extension for the bakery and meat processing industries. Calcium propionate, for which Kemira is the largest producer in the world, is not only used as the dominant dry mould inhibitor in the global animal feed industry but also in the bakery industry. Food quality concerns are often addressed with organic acids-based solutions, especially in processed meats. Kemira already has solutions in place to address these concerns, such as E. Coli, Salmonella, Listeria, Campylobacter, etc. and continues to develop and bring new products to market. Of course, the (consumer driven) ban on antibiotics has already resulted in organic acids-based solutions becoming the preferred alternative for antibiotics in modern animal production.

The merger of its food and feed segments is being supported by a new marketing campaign of which the first parts can already be seen in newly designed brochures, new tradeshow exposure as well as advertisements.

Despite a difficult 2009, the Kemira Group of Companies managed to achieve a EUR2.5 billion (US$3.4 billion) in global sales, with the best ever operative EBIT.
