China keeps close eye on animal feed production
A draft regulation released on Saturday (Feb 21) declared that animal feed and feed additive companies must immediately recall products upon discovery of any defect that may cause harm to animals or people.
The draft of a revised regulation on the administration of animal feed and feed additives is designed to meet increased public demand for better animal product food quality and safety, according to the Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council, China's cabinet.
Producers should immediately cease production and sales of defective products, recall the products and report the situation to relevant administrative authorities, the draft said.
The draft also imposes tougher punishment for irresponsible use of animal feedor feed additives.
Livestock operations may be fined as much as RMB50,000 (US$7,322) if they are found to have used prohibited feed or feed additives that are not included in the catalogue of approved items.
The draft regulation is open for public comment until March 15.
