Melamine in animal feeds must not exceed 2.5mg per kg, according to Vietnam's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD).
Vietnam's new standard mirrors those used by the US, Canada, and the EU.
The decision was made after the Animal Feed Consultative Council gathered experts from various agencies, and researched regulations of the US, Canada, the EU, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
Vietnam does not accept melamine in animal feed but the limit of 2.5mg is equivalent to zero, said Hoang Kim Giao, chief of the Animal Husbandry Agency.
The Agency has previously asked traders not to import and buy animal feeds and materials that contain melamine.
