Thailand scrutinizes feed, meat imports on melamine

Following numerous melamine scandals in China, the Department of Livestock Development (DLD) in Thailand has expanded their surveillance in testing feed and meat imports in an attempt to fully halt the entry of the banned chemical in the food and feed chain.

Thailand has barred the use of melamine since August 2007 as the chemical was the key suspect on several deaths of pets in the US last year. According to DLD's Livestock Standards and Certification office, the country has banned the importation, production and sale of all kinds of feed and feed ingredients containing melamine since last year. To widen security against further melamine access, the DLD has released several measures against entry of melamine-tainted feed in the country.
