The Ministry of Production has duly caused this 19 and 20 October 30 boats are part of an "operation Eureka" to assess whether there will be a second season of anchovy fishing this year, Congressman Freddy Sarmiento said.
That whether or not the second fishing season is a story that not only matter to local fishing companies, but the world market for fishmeal. The anchovy is the input on which fishmeal is manufactured, agricultural input of which Peru is the world''s leading exporter.
A scientific expedition of the Institute del Mar del Peru (IMARPE) held in September showed that there was not enough biomass of anchovy in the north central coast of Peru area, but it was felt that the results were inconclusive due to climatic anomalies.
To a certain result, IMARPE conduct an exploratory fishing operation, known as Operation Eureka, where several boats go fishing only to assess the size of the anchovy.
According to the size you know if the anchovy is in juvenile stage and therefore can not fish industrially. Only if it is found that the anchovies are already adult and have already been reproduced, a second fishing season, are permitted.
The president of the business association of fishing companies and manufacturers of fishmeal National Fisheries Society, Elena Conterno, has made available its ships IMARPE to perform the operation Eureka and assess the conditions in which the anchovy is.
