China-Mauritania Mixed Committee on Fisheries convenesmeeting in Beijing

Vice Minister Yu Kangzhen and Nani Ould Chrougha, Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Economy of Mauritania, signed the meeting minutes of the new session of China-Mauritania Mixed Committee on Fisheries in Beijing on Sept.14, 2015.
Yu Kangzhen and Nani Ould Chrougha co-chaired the meeting of the Committee on Sept.13, 2015. At the meeting, the two sides spoke highly of the achievements in long-term friendly cooperation, especially in fisheries. The Chinese side introduced the fisheries cooperationconducted by Chinese companies and fishing vessels in Mauritania. Mauritania briefed on its plan and major policies of fisheries from 2015 to 2019 that are currently under development. Both sides agreed to further enhance fisheries cooperation and expand cooperation fields; strengthen cooperation in combating illegal, unreported and uncontrolled fishery activities, and build up an information notification mechanism; and set up a focal point to follow up the implementation of consensus of the meeting and other related issues. The two sides also exchanged views on upgrading outdated fishing vessels, improving cooperation environment and solving concrete problems incooperation.
Mauritania, among all African countries, has conducted fisheries cooperation with China for the longest time and with the largest number of Chinese fishing boats. At present there are 3 Chinese high-sea fishing companies engaged in fishing and aquatic product processing in Mauritania, namely,China National Fisheries Corporation, Shanghai Fisheries General Corp. (Group) and Fuzhou Hongdong Pelagic Fishery Corporation.
China and Mauritania signed a marine fisheries agreement on August 22, 1991. According to this agreement, the Committee should hold meetings at irregular timeintervals. It is believed that themeeting in 2015 will play an active role in deepening bilateral fisheries cooperation, promoting socioeconomic development, enhancing communication and exchanges between peoples of the two countries, and jointlyimplementing the 21stCentury Maritime Silk Road Initiative.
