Currently, the poultry industry is the most booming industry in
China and every local and international farm is trying to maximize their
profits either by increasing their production capacity or by making their farms
more efficient through feed efficiency. In most cases, the feed efficiency is
achieved by balancing the ratio between energy and acids&KeyWordID=f5299d7e41974a94842f97050c4259ed&PublisherID=b3fac7dd-9156-424c-9843-193631ebb67b' target='_blank'>amino acids, or by improving
nutrient digestibility by several different means. However, the feed efficiency
rate can also be improved even after the feed has been mixed and delivered at
the farm. The following few steps can help the farm owners to further boost the
efficiency of their feed to ensure greater broiler productivity.
-
Avoid
Mycotoxins: Molds consumes valuable nutrients from the feed and produce
mycotoxins. Moldy feeds not just reduce the nutrient level but can become
toxic for the poultry. To avoid this, farmers should not just stick to
mycotoxin binder or mold inhibitor but should periodically inspect the silos
and clean in thoroughly. Furthermore, placing the drinkers close to the
feed also improve feed efficiency.
-
Use
efficient feeders to avoid feed wastage: Farmers often ignore the
importance of right feeders to save some cost, but feeders should be managed
so that feed consumption is neither an opportunity to beat boredom nor a
hurried fight to eat.
-
Light
Management: Though, many farmers believe that constant lighting program
such as (23 hour light and 1-hour darkness) is good to increase feed rate
passage in birds but such program is not best in terms of feed
digestibility. Therefore, a light on and off program ( for example, 1 hour
light and 1-hour darkness or so on ) allow the birds to fully digest their
feed while resting and provide them enough time to "refill' during light
hours. To incorporate this program the farmer needs to have a large
feeding space and efficient feeder system so all the birds can consume
feed at the same time.
-
Avoid
heavy Body weight at market age: Feed efficiency tends to decrease as the
birds' age as they have the greater body mass to maintain every day and
maintenance consume energy and amino acids. So the farmer needs to decide
on minimum weight per bird that is acceptable. Though this will not be
translated into maximum profits, along with it other factors such as cost
per weight gain, or weight gain per given floor surface should also be
taken into consideration.
-
Maintain
a healthy flock: An important factor for feed efficiency is the health of
the birds, as healthy birds translate into an efficient feed. Sic or
subclinical affected birds do not a consumer as much feed as healthy
birds, and what they do consume is usually goes to fighting off the
disease. The sick birds might even break down muscle protein, which
reduces their body weight making the feed efficiency worst. Therefore,
keeping the birds healthy will maximize the feed efficiency.
Feed efficiency is an important factor especially for the
Chinese farmers because most of the production cost is dependent on feed as it
is so far the most costly expenditure in poultry farming.
