At present in China, two production technologies of sugar alcohols are applied in industrial production namely hydrogenate technology and biological technology. Traditionally, glucose is hydrogenated in the presence of nitrogen as a catalyst under high pressure and high temperature, which is easy to realize industrial production of sugar alcohols on a large scale. However, this technology has some disadvantages.

Bioproduction to produce sugar alcohols is a promising and widely-used production technology in the world, including microbial fermentation and enzyme process with advantages of being safe, eco-friendly However, some important problems of biological technology have to be solved. What is the detailed information of the two technologies?

Among the major kinds of sugar alcohols in China, xylitol, mannitol and erythritol can be produced by biological method. Sorbitol and maltitol remain in chemical process.
